Job Description

Foundations Lab Monitor

The Foundations Lab supports exploratory study informed by the natural world and strengthens connections across Pratt Institute through interdisciplinary engagement in the first year and beyond.

Foundations Lab monitors work closely with students, staff, and faculty under the supervision of the Technical Director of Foundation.

Regular tasks:

  • Greet students, faculty, and visitors who enter the Lab. Answer questions and retrieve specimens. 

  • Handle and maintain extremely delicate materials (including taxidermy) and equipment.

  • Conduct book and equipment check out.

  • Ensure that students, faculty, and guests follow Lab policies.

  • Assist with set up and clean up for classes, workshops, lectures in the Lab.

  • Restock and maintain cleanliness in the Lab, supply closets, and classrooms. Open and process deliveries.

  • Water plants and feed fish.

Occasional tasks:

  • Answer phone calls

  • Clean and maintain fish tanks, taxidermy, and other delicate materials with supervision

  • Contribute to Foundations Lab 

  • Work on special projects as assigned

Job Requirements

Job Requirements
Must be an undergraduate student enrolled for at least 6 credits in Spring 2026.

Must be available 12-6 pm on Wednesdays.
Student Monitors must be reliable and show up for shifts on time.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Student Monitors must be detail oriented and observant.
Student Monitors must be comfortable enforcing Foundations Lab policies with the support of department staff.
Students must be comfortable monitoring the Foundations Lab alone at times. 

Useful skills
Applicants for the Foundations Lab Monitor position should be able to demonstrate an interest in natural sciences and/or art fields.
Experience caring for fish, plants, and other living creatures.
Experience in a customer service role.
Interest in archiving, cataloguing and caring for fragile objects.
Interest in microscopy, taxidermy, and/or Foundation education.
Photography and/or video shooting and editing skills are a plus, but not required.
