Job Description

Jewelry studio monitors are in charge of the studio during nights and weekends when the studio technician and professors are not available. Aside from needing the G-61 certificate from the FDNY for use of torches, they are responsible for managing the sign in/out of all students and tools, enforcing all environmental and safety regulations, assisting and overseeing all students in properly using tools and equipment (including gas torches, rotary and other power tools, hand tools, kilns, etc), and completing weekly maintenance tasks and/or assisting the studio technician with any special projects. Monitors are required to attend all monitor meetings organized by the studio technician.

Job Requirements

Students hired for this position must be self-directed, punctual, reliable and have a good work ethic. Must be a Jewelry Junior or Senior student to have the required one year of experience using the jewelry studios to run the shop. Within a week of being hired the student will have to be certified by the NYC Fire Department to be able to supervise the use of all torches in the studio. Students will be trained on how to properly and safely open and close the studio, which includes: proper procedure in turning gas tanks on and off, handling and disposing of various chemicals used in the studio, turning kilns on and off, managing vent usage in the studio, and other procedure-based tasks.
