Assistant/Clerk for the Pratt School of Architecture (SoA) Reading Room     

Work Study Position

 

The SoA is seeking student workers to join the Reading Room team on the lower level of Higgins Hall at the SoA on the Brooklyn campus. The Reading Room was established through a generous gift from former faculty member William Menking. For more information about the Reading Room, click this link

Job Description:

We are looking for organized, detail-oriented students with an interest in art, architecture, and research to support the SoA Reading Room. Candidates must be patient, curious, and proficient with Google apps, including Sheets, Docs, Gmail, and G-Chat. Responsibilities include assisting visitors and managing the collection. This on-site role is based in the SoA on the Brooklyn campus. Work is limited to scheduled shifts; remote work is not available, and in-person attendance is required. Our goal is to keep the Reading Room accessible and valuable to the SoA community.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.

  • Understands and follows spoken and written instructions, and communicates clearly with faculty, students, and staff.

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and works well with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Is adaptable and flexible, and promptly communicates schedule changes to the supervisor.

  • Able to perform basic physical tasks such as squatting, kneeling, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repeating motions.

 
Job Requirements

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and check in with the supervisor to review daily tasks.

  • Remain in the Reading Room throughout scheduled work hours.

  • Assist visitors with research, locating resources, and using the Reading Room online catalog.

  • Keep the bookshelves tidy by putting books back in their proper places and making sure everything is in order.

  • Respond to visitor inquiries regarding the collection in person and via email.

  • Assist with opening or closing the Reading Room as required and maintain a clean environment.

  • Additional duties may include cataloging books, preparing reserve materials, or assisting with other assigned tasks.

The hourly wage is $17.00 for both graduate and undergraduate students. The Reading Room operates Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The position is available from January 26 to June 30, 2026.

Each student may work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.
