Graduate Assistant – Sustainability & Community Engagement

Fall Semester 2026

Position Details

  • Hours: 5 hours per week

  • Compensation: $20.00 per hour

  • Duration: 15-week Fall 2026 semester

Position Overview

The Pratt Fashion Department seeks a motivated Graduate Assistant to support departmental sustainability initiatives, community engagement, and responsible material management. This position offers hands-on experience developing systems that reduce waste, strengthen sustainable learning practices, and build partnerships across the Institute and the broader community. The Graduate Assistant will contribute to creating a culture of environmental stewardship in the fashion department as a whole, while supporting students, faculty, and community collaborators.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement sustainable systems and workflows that minimize material waste within the Fashion Department.

  • Support sustainability-focused learning experiences by assisting with workshops, demonstrations, resource development, and student engagement activities.

  • Coordinate and partner with FABSCRAP to facilitate textile waste collection, pre-sorting, inventory management, and reuse initiatives.

  • Assist in tracking textile waste diversion efforts and documenting sustainability outcomes.

  • Collaborate with Pratt's Center K–12 to support community-based educational initiatives focused on sustainable fashion, creative reuse, and material literacy.

  • Research and recommend best practices for sustainable studio operations and circular material management.

  • Help organize sustainability-related events, volunteer opportunities, and departmental initiatives.

  • Maintain shared resources and communication materials that promote responsible making practices and environmental awareness.

  • Support faculty and staff with sustainability projects and other departmental initiatives as needed.

 

Job Requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in sustainable fashion, circular design, material reuse, or environmental stewardship.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.

  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience with community engagement, educational programming, or nonprofit partnerships is a plus.
